Palm Pre 1.3.1 released to O2 UK

Unfortunately it's not fixed the 'phone offline' bug.

Response is a bit snappier, and takes less time to wake up.

TiVo returns to UK with Virgin!

Unfortunately I will have to move house as I'm not in a Virgin cable area :(

Palm Pre- close but not quite

Not quite an iPhone beater yet - but hopefully the November software update will fix the bugs that prevent the Pre from taking over from my iPhone!

WebOS is truly fantastic, but needs some polishing!

The UK Pre is currently only on version 1.1.3 as compared to the USA version.

My main gripes:
I have the 'Phone Offline' bug
Calender sometimes takes too long to confirm an entry
Device takes too long to wake up from sleep

Gomadic Palm Pre Car Holder mini-review

Not sure if this is worth the USD $24.95.

It seems just a generic car vent holder, but can hold pretty much any smartphone except the large ones like the HTC Advantage/Ameo.

At least this comes in 2 parts, unlike the older Gomadic generic vent holder.

This means you can use soimething like a proclip to attach the main holder instead of the slightly less secure plastic vent clips.

Monday 12 October 2009

Palm Pre -will be getting one on Friday!

I have already ordered a touchstone, car holder and universal tips from gomadic.

Can't wait!

Mark Burgess's Up on A Hill chords and lyrics

Not gadget related, but worked this out just now:

Up on a hill

Em A
With all my heart I resist, With all my soul I resist

The killers kiss and sweet sick motive promises,Where will they end? tin can cars and judas friends

The Lion sleeps with the cheat

And sits in awe at his Feet

The sacred cell , opposing products on the shelf
Devils bait, way beyond the sell-by date

Watching Rome burn ,Yes I'm a fool, A fool not a rat

Theres no desire to remain and breathe, While you suffocate

Should iphone have physical keyboard?

After 2 years with the iPhone keyboard, I think I need both a software one and a hardware one! For a few situations e.g. language switching the software keyboard with good auto-correct is better, but for one-handed use, long emails I prefer a physical one. Also you get more visible screen estate with a physical keyboard.

A physical keyboard with good auto-correct would be ideal. The iphone keyboard is only good because of the auto-correct -it lacks haptic feedback. Other companies don’t have as good auto-correct, but that can be added in software.

So I’m going for the Palm Pre - you can easily hack it and add the onscreen keyboard if you want, and you can hack the auto-correct so it is as good as/better than the iPhone’s and more suited to your particular use. The iphone’s autocorrect implementation is faster than the Pre, but the Pre is still in its infancy and should improve vastly with updates and hacks.

I've made a page optimised for the Pre.Get it here

Which is faster -Pre or iphone 3gs

CNET gives the pre 2 out of 3 versus the 3gs - Pre wins!

But I guess it will change when we get 7.2mbps

EDIT: Seems like in real world tests using WIFI only the 3GS is faster. Though that can change once more optimisation on the Pre is done.

They run similar hardware so I guess its no surprise results are similar.

The auto-standby should be customisable, just like a Windows PC.
So you can set Mon-Fri 8am-5pm off except bank holidays etc..

Option to turn off live sound while in EPG
Direct delete facility for Anytime
Anytime programmes are only deleted when out of disk space

EPG overlaid over live TV option with transparency settings like Windows 7
Vary anytime space usage: Reclaim lost space when anytime not in use
Customisable anytime similar to TiVo suggestions
Limit which channels Anytime can record from
ability to hide/remove unwanted channels in EPG

Support for music services like TiVo series 2 and 3 e.g. add Last.FM, napster,

Ability to pause/FF/rewind while EPG is overlaid

option for smarter re-schedul;ing -if you schedule a programme and the schedule changes, the current EPG usually removes it with no warning! It should give you warnings in a recording history screen and attempt to re-schedule the programme when it next appears in the EPG.

Simplify number of kepresses required - better UI design like Windows 7/ReplayTV/TiVo

Option to turn sound off in EPG to prevent unwanted hearing of sports results etc..

If only one LNB is connected, SkyHD should display question asking you if you want to operate in single feed mode instead of just saying 'No satelitte signal received' which isn't helpful!

If unsubbed it should default to single LNB mode if only one LNB is connected.

More native/hybrid output options e.g.
Native - all formats output as is, without extra processing;
Hybrid - all SD output output as 576p, all other formats output as is;
Hybrid 720p - all SD output as 576p, all HD converted to 720p;

Ability to function as an extra Sonos or Squeezebox client and/or controller

Ability to record, pause /rewind when in an interactive channel

Smarter padding - say you are recording 2 consecutive programmes on SciFi and another on Sky1HD and the Sky1HD and SciFi programmes start at 9pm and the previous SciFi started at 8pm.
SkyHD is dumb and decides to padd BOTH sciFi programmes, whereas a smarter thing to do would to be only pad the start of the Sky1HD programme at 9pm and not pad both the start and ends of the consecutive SciFi programmes!

Possible bugs, but could be additional features:

1. Allow highlighted programme to be displayed in different colour if in HD when selected -the current highlight HD option does not display a different colour if you have selected it!!! (Is this a bug?)

2. Now and next banner does not display different colours for HD programmes

Hardware:

Remote re-designed to add skip to start and skip to end buttons and also seperate dedicated slow-motion button (like TiVo)

SkyHD new EPG -

New EPG

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Got it on one of my Sky boxes.
Nice and fast - as it should have been 10 years ago!
Nice to see HD originated programmes highlighted (though they should change the colour of the currently selected programme if its HD or use a different colour scheme so that you can tell whether the currently selected programme is in HD at a glance), and finally more than a single letter search! Once again - most of this and MUCH MUCH more should have been available 10 years ago like it was by 2 other PVR companies who I won't mention

However, even after 2 reboots, always displays NO satellite signal received, when signal strength has been fine since day 1, even showing fine in the menu

Iphone 3.0 vs Palm Pre

I'm eagerly awaiting these features.

However, I had most of them in my 1997 Palm Visorphone -so Apple is 12 years late!

In addition, the exta features won't make it as functional as the Palm Pre -no multitasking, intelligent cloud support, PC/Mac independence, full file management,Flash player etc..., so I will have to have both phones come June/July, though I suspect the iphone will only be used as a backup and Last.Fm/Sonos controller!

Is it only me who thinks the June /July release date is coincidental with the Palm Pre release?

Extra wide screens -suitable for subtitles?

The new extra-wide screens from Philips could be great as a subtitle monitor.

One of my pet hates are big subtitles overlaid on top of the movie instead of confined in black bars.

I would put the subtitles on one screen below my main 16:9 screen.

Is there any subtitle software for pulling text from HD-DVD/Blu-ray?

You can integrate Last.Fm on your TiVo (series 2 and 3 only tho I think)

Check it out

http://www.apps.tv/

Would be nice to get this working on a UK series one, but might be a bit slow.

Sonos-Iphone-Last.FM

These integrate pretty well and are great way to listen to your music!

Very flexible in finding new music, a bit like TiVo, but not quite as powerful.
Last.fm has a pretty good matching facility and the Sonos and iPhone integration is neat.

You can also see how many people and how often they listen to your music!

Good luck Steve Jobs

Hope he recovers soon!

I've not always been a fan of everything Apple (no cut/copy/paste on Iphone) -but they produce truly innovative and sexy products.

A truly great man.

DVR is now a more popular term than VCR or PVR

According to google.com

29m for DVR
21.6m for VCR
11.9m for PVR

However the UK seem a bit behind:
on google.co.uk from UK only:
952k DVR
1.03m VCR
908k PVR

Should UK Digital Video Recorders be called PVRs or should this term be reserved for learning/smart recorders like TiVo and ReplayTV?

PVR in India is a chain of cinemas
PVR in Mexico is an airport
So I'm guessing they use the term DVR instead :)

http://www.humaxdigital.com/uk/ uses all 4 terms: DVR, PVR and DTR (digital television recorder) and HDR (hard disk or high definition recorder?)

The PVR is now 11 years old

ReplayTV launched the first PVR in 1998/1999, with TiVo following a month later.

It's such a shame that Sky+ and all current UK produced DVRs have such poor EPGs and poor software features and design compared to either of those - and that's comparing to models 11 years ago!

Of course the PQ and sound quality improvements are immense, but I had hoped Sky, Topfield, Humax etc.. would have something vaguely as good by now.
I'm guessing it will be 2020 before the old 1998 TiVo and ReplayTV will be surpassed by Sky and Humax etc.. :(

I'm still waiting for Sky to enable a hundred features I had with ReplayTV and TIVo 11 years ago :(
